You will find lots of temples in this city but today I will be listing down some of the most famous temples in Thrissur which you should definitely visit.
These temples are believed to be really scared and they hold very much importance in the Hindu religion as well as in the minds of Keraliya people. Now let’s not waste much of your time and let’s just get into it
Kodungallur Sri Kurumba Bhagavathi Temple, Thrissur
This temple is a beautiful sight to see. The whole area of the temple is spread around over 10 acres of land and it is covered by the Banyan Trees. The main deity of this temple is Bhadrakali which is a reincarnation of Kali. Locally this goddess is also known as Kodungallooramma and she is worshipped with Turmeric. The idol is really mesmerizing. It is about six foot tall made entirely of the wood of the jackfruit Tree. It is said that this Temple was founded by Parshurama who was the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Triprayar Sri Rama Temple, Thrissur
It is said that both the Shiva and Vaishnava philosophies meet at the Triprayar Sri Rama temple. Here the idol of Rama also posses the main aspects of Lord Shiva. It is believed that the main idol was worshipped by Lord Krishna at it was lost after the city went underwater, Later on, it was discovered by a local fisherman who constructed the temple. The idol of Rama is completely unique in this temple. It has Four hands holding the conch, a disc, a bow and a garland. The temple is situated on the banks of river Triprayar.
Sri Krishna Temple, Guruvayur, Thrissur
This temple is located in the Guruvayur town in the Thrissur District. This is a Krishna temple which is also known as Bhuloka Vaikunta in the locals. It loosely translates to holy adobe of Vishnu on earth. The main deity in this temple is Lord Krishna and similar to the Rama Idol in Trprayar temple This idol of Lord Krishna also has Four arms One holding the Panchajanya conch, one holding the Sudarshana Chakra, one holding the mace and the Last one holding a lotus with a Holy basil garland one which represents form that was revealed to Krishna’s parents at the time of his birth. This temple is also known as the Dwarka Of South India. Keep in mind that non-Hindus are not allowed Inside this temple.
Mammiyur Sri Mahadeva Temple, Guruvayur, Thrissur
The main deity of this temple is Lord Shiva who faces the East. Also in this temple, you will find Idol of Vishnu As well which is believed to be here to set off the Shiva’s Rudra or Angry Avatar. Along with these two idols, you will also see Ganesha, Subrahmanya and Ayyappa
Chowalloor Shiva Temple, Kandanassery, Thrissur
This temple is just located few kilometres away from the Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple, This Shiva temple is one of the oldest Shivalaya and it is believed that it is one of the 108 Shivalays which were built by the Parshurama. Th main deity of this temple is Lord Shiva and according to the legend, it is believed that lord Shiva manifested himself into a devotees umbrella who was told to visit this place to worship him. This place is also unique because this is the only place where you will be able to see Lord Shiva with all of its family. Along with him is his consort, Parvati and his children Ganesha, Subrahmanian, Ayyappa and Anjaneya.
Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple, Thrissur
This temple is one of the rival groups the other one is Paramekkavu Temple, that participates in the Thrissur Pooram. This temple is one of the most popular temples in all over Kerala.You will feel even more special in this temple as the constant chanting of Bhagavad Gita is going on. For all the devotee’s Free lunch is served and the dress code for this temple is very strict. The main deity of this temple is the Infant Krishna who is also known as Unnikrishnan. Goddess Bhagwati is also worshipped in this temple. Also, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha just behind the main temple, the temple allows only to wear traditional dresses for men and women no modern dresses are allowed.
Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple, Thrissur
As mentioned earlier this Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple is rival of the Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple at the Thrissur Pooram Festival. This Paramekkavu Bhagavathy temple almost dates back to thousands of years and has two shrines. The upper shrine is also known as Melekkavu which is older and the other one is called as Thazhekkavu which is the lower shrine. The main deity of this temple is Goddess Bhagvathi and it is believed that this deity is also as old as the temple. The wooden idol which you will be able to see today has been consecrated in 1997 after it was discovered that the older one which was also made from wood was damaged. It is located near the Thrissur railway station. It is just 3 kilometres away from it.
This is one of the main attractions why lots of people visit the Thrissur. Inside a huge stone fortification which almost encloses the area around 9 acres is a Vadakkunnathan Temple of Thrissur. Four Gopurams or towers surround the-the temple. This temple is a multi shrine temple where the main three shrines are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Shankaranarayana and Rama. This temple is a classic example of Keralyian architecture. The temple also has lots of Mural paintings and in these paintings, you will be able to see various scenarios or episodes of Mahabharata. It is believed that this was the very first temple built by the Parshurama who was a worshipper of Lord Shiva and also Sixth Avatar of Lord Vishnu. This temple is completely surrounded by the Thekkinkadu Maidan which serves as the main location for Thrissur Pooram. This Thrissur Pooram is one of the most sacred, colourful and a really beautiful Temple festival which is held in Kerala. This festival is held during the months of April or May. Keep in mind that Non-Hindus are not permitted to enter this temple. This temple is declared as the national monument by the government of India
