Such is the popularity of the gateway that the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation moved the Elephant’s Festival of music and dance from its original venue at Elephanta Caves to the Gateway.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, these sculpted Caves are located 10 kilometers east of the Gateway on Gharapuri Island ( city of Caves) dating between 5th and 8th centuries. These Caves are sculpted from solid basalt rock. It comprises of 7  Caves. Of them, 5 are in lower west side and 2 in the eastern top of the hillock.
